About Sandy

Through poetic minimalism, vivid colour, and a curious eye, I reveal the world’s extraordinary beauty—inviting viewers to rediscover awe, hope, and connection in every landscape, culture, human, and creature.

My art is an invitation to rediscover the world through the eyes of wonder.

My art is rooted in a single, luminous impulse: curiosity. From my first encounter with a Kwan Yin Buddha as a child, I have sought the quiet poetry at the heart of the world—moments when light, colour, and form reveal the extraordinary within the ordinary. Guided by the philosophies of Taoism and Buddhism, I traverse landscapes, cities, and habitats with an attentive, patient eye, lingering until the rhythm of a place emerges.

Whether capturing the intelligence in an animal’s gaze, the sculptural quality of water, or the bold colours of a city, my intention as an artist is constant: to invite viewers to pause, see with childlike wonder, and rediscover hope in a world that all too often feels chaotic and dark.

Photography became my language for wonder in the mountains of Sichuan, China. Standing amid the spectacular teal glacial pools of Jiuzhaigou amid contrasting fall leaves of yellow and orange, I felt the Taoist sense of awe—of being at the heart of life. When I shared those first images, I saw others light up with disbelief, curiosity, and joy. This is what I strive for in every photograph: to collapse the boundary between moment and memory, to connect people to nature and culture, and to rekindle care for the living tapestry of our world.

My art is a testament to the belief that, if we look slowly and with care, beauty and hope are everywhere. Through my lens, I seek not only to reveal the world’s fragile wonder, but to inspire its protection—for the generations and stories yet to come.

When I shared my first photographs of Jiuzhaigou, I saw faces light up with disbelief, curiosity, and wonder. That’s when I knew: this is what I want my art to do.

Before shifting into fine art photography, Sandy spent more than a decade working in human rights, where she photographed global development programs. Her photography stood out for capturing the quiet power, dignity, and pride of people reclaiming their power as changemakers within their communities.

This experience shaped her belief in ethical storytelling, cultural respect, and the power of images to build connection — values that continue to guide her fine art practice today.

Her transition into fine art photography reflects a lifelong fascination with colour, composition, and emotional resonance. Whether photographing glacier-carved landscapes, wildlife on remote coastlines, or the architectural rhythm of culturally significant cities, her work seeks moments of clarity and immersion — where the world feels both intimate and expansive.

Sandy now works across Europe, developing new collections, exhibiting internationally, and supporting mission-driven organisations through limited storytelling collaborations.

Sandy accepts a limited number of commissions and storytelling assignments with mission-driven organisations each year. For inquiries, please get in touch.

Sandy’s Story

A midwife in Nepal checks her pregnant patient’s vitals. The USAID Global Health Supply Chain project provided this birthing clinic with critical life-saving medicines for pregnant women, infants, and contraceptives so women can plan when, if, and how many children to have.

Sandy’s statement on ethics

I bring a strong ethical commitment to every shoot. My editorial work is grounded in consent and respect for the people involved, always prioritising dignity and shared authorship. I collaborate with local communities and guides to support local economies, minimise environmental impact, and leave no trace. Animals are photographed in their natural habitats or in conservation reserves where their protection comes first—and I continually assess my travel to reduce my carbon footprint without compromising the story.

Artist’s note

My journey has felt magical, but it wouldn’t be possible without so many people. I cannot thank you enough for everything you have done.

Fellow travelers—Cora, Graciella, John, Julie, Kelly, Tzip, Scottie, Jeremy, Justin, Kayla, and Chris—thank you for patiently waiting, often in extreme weather, while I got the shot I wanted and thank you for taking the photos on this page instead of allowing me to always hide behind the camera.

The Guides, Drivers, Translators, and Global Development folks who helped me navigate this world—Ahmed, Alecia, Berhan, Bina, Brian, Charlie, Chinara, Chris, Dilnosa, Dipendra, Emanuel, Ian, John, Mary, Mikhael, Peri, Rajeeve, Roberto, Rodrigo, Romi, and Tara.

The folks who believed in me and have encouraged and supported me in following this dream—Andrew, Barbara, Elizabeth, Jamie, Kaje, Kevin, Laura, Madeline, Mae, Max, Samantha, Sola, Stephanie, Tony, Zee, and my parents, Dave and Kris, who gave me my first camera.

A special thank you to my uncle Ron McCarty, who gave me both my sense of wanderlust and my appreciation for nature and wildlife as art. My sister, Amanda Adkison, taught me everything I needed to know to begin my photography journey. My bestie forever, Kelly Haydon, who has always been there for me no matter what. To Jamie Ross for taking the amazing portrait shots of me seen on this site, in social media, and in magazine features that discuss my art.

None of this would be possible without you; my deepest appreciation!
